We’ve visited the Flavor Game topic before, in the July edition where we delighted in Pimm’s Popsicles and some amazing and strange Oreo flavors.
In this edition of “Really Neat Things,” we’re re-visiting the realm of the Oreo, but first… NUTS!
It seems that one of my favorite snacks (almonds!) have been getting into the Flavor Game, too. While at the grocery store recently, I came across Blue Diamond’s latest foray into flavoring almonds under their BOLD brand: Habañero BBQ. I had already become addicted to the highly savory Wasabi & Soy Sauce. But this was worth a shot, since I also happen to be a huge fan of the barbecue chip. Not all things barbecue, mind you. Just the chip.
Turns out, the Habañero BBQ will run a “pretty… pretty… pretty…” close second, but the Wasabi & Soy Sauce will remain in the lead. (It also bears mentioning that Blue Diamond’s BOLD brand also offers the current popular “flavorite” Sriracha and Salt ‘n Vinegar. Haven’t, and most likely won’t, try those.)
Now, who has come up with a way to up the ante on the Flavor Game? None other than the Oreo people. They’ve come out with a mystery wrapped in an Oreo. Has anyone seen/bought/tried/guessed this yet? I did, and it was an elusive taste, but an Oreo enthusiast I know (make that an enthusiastic junk food generalist) pointed out to me what it was, and yes, it seems right.
Maybe someone else out there can. If so, get your suggestion in there.
You could even be a lucky winner of a lot of money, according to the back panel.
This month in “Really Neat Things” we have a Double Neat Whammy:
The first one falls firmly within the category of “Different-Snack-Flavored Snacks.” There have always been multi-variety flavors of snack foods (think ranch flavored Doritos, peanut butter filled M&Ms), but in the past couple of years there’s been a branching-out trend that’s getting pretty creative. One of my favorites was the Lay’s Kettle Cooked Indian Tikka Masala chips, which is now out of its limited time on grocery shelves. As the article notes, Pimm’s popsicles are available only on the Other Side of the Pond at the moment.
This second Really Neat Thing can be had right here in the U.S.A., and it comes from a national favorite: OREO.
They’re running a contest, and some entries can even get their own personal small batch sent directly to them. Maybe the Oreo bakers just want to try out one of your recipes. Suggestions, anyone?
(Someone I know suggested an Oreo where the inside tastes like the whole Oreo instead of just the filling, and the outside tastes like the whole Oreo instead of just the outside. Seems complicated, but so does Mississippi Mie Pie, and the Oreo people pulled that off.)
For the record, I’ve tried the Firework, Blueberry Pie, and Waffle & Syrup flavors.
